World's First 3D Printed Office

Three-D printed structures like homes or apartment buildings are not a surprise to most people. After all, various ambitious projects including structures constructions are underway. Most of the buildings only apply 3D printings for the exterior walls as a way of replacing concrete blocks usage or wood framing.

The United Arab Emirates National Innovation Committee has already revealed a project that is expected to take things an extra step. The committee’s aim is to transform UAE into a world’s center of technology. By initiating the project, the committee aims at improving the operations related to architecture and design. In addition, the committee has also set forth a project to 3D print an office building. They have hired companies to print the office’s exterior walls, interior walls and the furniture in that office.

The WinSun Global Company which 3D printed a home and an apartment building earlier in China is to conduct the project. Other leading architectural and engineering firms involved in the project are Gensler, Syska Hennessy and Thornton Thomasetti.

The UAE National Innovation Committee chairman, Al Gergawi, explained that the project shows the visions the leaders in Dubai have - the leaders are now doing what was once a dream. He continued to say that the building will show creativity and efficiency of 3D printing technology in Dubai. They expect 3D printing to reshape the design and construction sectors in the country.

The expectations in the project

For the project to be complete, it requires both time and resources. It is a 200 square foot building and the engineers will have to use a 3D printer that's 20 feet tall. The engineers will also need to assemble the printer on the building site which is located at a very busy intersection at the heart of Dubai. The engineers will also need special reinforced concrete, fiber reinforced plastic and fiber reinforced gypsum to allow fabrication of the various decorative and structural components of the building structure. It will take several weeks for the project to be complete. The labor costs will reduce by 50 to 80% and the construction wastes will also reduce by 30-60%.

Purpose of the building

When complete, this building will be used for various purposes and in its inside, it will feature a 3D printing exhibition. This is the first project that “Museum of the Future” is expected to conduct. The museum began its operations earlier this year. It was also an expectation that 3D printing was to be utilized in the museum’s creation.

It is will be more interesting to witness what else this project will bring forth while Dubai will be aiming to make a great statement to the rest of the world related to its technological progress. Interestingly, Winsun will print the office on the site rather than printing walls and then shipping them to the site as they did with other structures.

3D printing is a great idea and if the project will be a success then 3D printing might change into a standard way of building. The project promoted as both cost effective and time saving is the first of its kind in the world.
